Broadband in North Tipperary

The North Tipperary Broadband Group, working in partnership with Shannon Broadband, has as its objective, the progression of initiatives to encourage the provision and usage of broadband throughout North Tipperary.

The initiative involves the following:
a. County agencies working in partnership to promote broadband usage.
b. Liaising with service providers to negotiate pervasive supply of broadband.
c. Co-operating with Shannon Broadband and its county representatives in the Shannon Region.
d. The appointment of a Broadband Coordinator to pursue the strategies outlined above.

The following North Tipperary GBS2 proposals have been approved by the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources for the provision of broadband services to underserved communities in North Tipperary. Tipperary Institute holds "Broadband in Tipperary '05" seminar

A broadband seminar entitled "Broadband in Tipperary '05" was held by Tipperary Institute on Thursday 23rd June, 2005 from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM..

The seminar focused on applications for the use of broadband by schools, communities and residential users.

Community selection of North Tipperary Group Broadband Scheme providers

    1. Public Information Meetings

A number of public information meetings about broadband were held during March 2005 and April 2005 to provide information about the benefits of broadband usage and to explain the County and Group Broadband Scheme under which Government funding was available for proposals submitted by 28th April, 2005. Community representatives collected the names of potential broadband subscribers prior to making contact with broadband service providers.

Note: A public information meeting was also held in Killaloe by the Killaloe/Ballina community broadband group on 4th March, 2005.

    2. Community representatives met Broadband providers 

A number of broadband service providers made presentations to community representatives on 14th April, 2005 in Nenagh. The meeting gave community representatives an opportunity to meet the service providers and evaluate the services offered.

3. Community representatives selected their Group  Broadband provider

The community representatives selected their Group Broadband provider in each case. The provider then submitted a Group Broadband Scheme proposal to the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources before 28th April, 2005.

 

'Maximising ICT for Business' seminars

A series of evening information seminars entitled ‘Maximising ICT for Business' took place in Thurles (22nd February, 2006) and Nenagh (6th March, 2006). The seminars were organised by Tipperary North County Enterprise Board in conjunction with the North Tipperary Broadband Group.

The seminars aimed to help owner/managers understand the benefits of using Internet applications.

'Broadband for Business'  Lunch-time seminars

A series of lunch-time information seminars entitled ‘Broadband for Business’ took place in Thurles (23rd August), Roscrea (25th August), Templemore (30th August) and Nenagh (1st September). The seminars provided information to businesses about the benefits of broadband usage while outlining factors to consider when choosing a broadband product.

Speakers included Anthony O’Reilly, North Tipperary Broadband Coordinator and Mike Cox, Computer Services Manager, Tipperary Institute. A number of broadband service providers also attended the seminars and were available to discuss broadband requirements and availability with interested businesses.

Broadband Developments

1. Proposals to implement Metropolitan Area Networks in Nenagh, Roscrea and Templemore have been approved and a similar proposal for Thurles has been submitted, awaiting further details from the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources.
